The Night a Comedian Roasted My Terrible Vacation Photos

I didn't expect to become a comedy club regular on my Regent Seven Seas cruise, or to bond with a performer over my hilariously bad photography skills.

I'm not usually a comedy club person. Give me a nice dinner at Compass Rose on the Seven Seas Explorer and I'm happy. But on the third night of my solo cruise, I was feeling restless after dinner and wandered past the Atrium Café, where I saw a sandwich board advertising "Open Mic Night – Come Share Your Talents!" with a little comedy mask drawn on it. For some reason, my wine-buzzed brain thought this would be the perfect place to spend my evening. The comedy club on this ship is honestly one of the coolest intimate venues I've ever seen. It's tucked away on Deck 6, intimate with maybe 80 seats max, dim lighting, a tiny stage with a single spotlight, and that perfect combination of cozy and sophisticated that Regent does so well. I grabbed a seat in the back—always the back when you're flying solo—ordered a cosmopolitan from the bartender (because apparently I was staying in vacation mode), and settled in to watch whatever was about to happen. The first three acts were solid. A guy from Connecticut did material about cruise ship elevators. A woman from Texas made us all laugh about airport security lines.
