I was terrified of formal dining until I walked into the main dining room on Viking Sky and realized this wasn't my grandmother's cruise experience.

I'll be honest: I almost skipped the main dining room entirely on my first night aboard Viking Sky. I'd booked this seven-day Norwegian cruise with my husband as a sort of "let's try something different" kind of vacation, but the whole formal dining thing made me nervous. I'm a jeans-and-sneakers person, and the idea of sitting at an assigned table with strangers while being served multiple courses felt like something out of a Jane Austen novel.
