My First Main Dining Room Experience Was Nothing Like I Expected

Full disclosure: I was scared of the main dining room. Genuinely anxious about it. This was my first cruise ever, and I'd spent an embarrassing amount of time watching YouTube videos about dining room etiquette, dress codes, and what to do if you somehow made a social misstep in front of strangers while eating. I'd already made about seventeen mental mistakes on embarkation day—getting lost trying to find my cabin (three times), accidentally walking into a staff-only area, sitting in someone else's deck chair for twenty minutes before realizing—so I was determined to at least get the dining room thing right. The morning of our first dinner, I put on the dress I'd specifically purchased for "cruise formal nights." It was navy, knee-length, and I thought I looked pretty good.
