What was supposed to be a simple snorkeling trip turned into an accidental tour of Cozumel's back roads when my family and I completely misread our excursion directions.
I've taken plenty of cruises—three to be exact—but nothing quite prepared me for the comedy of errors that unfolded during our port day in Cozumel. My wife Jennifer, our two kids, and I had been looking forward to this day since we booked our Princess Cruises itinerary back in January. The Emerald Princess is a beautiful ship, and we'd spent the first three days at sea enjoying everything from the Horizon Grill to the nighttime shows. But port days? That's where the real adventure happens, or so I thought. We'd booked what the Princess Cruises website described as "Cozumel Reef Snorkeling: A Premier Underwater Experience." The description made it sound absolutely incredible—crystal clear waters, tropical fish, coral formations. The price tag was steep at $189 per person, but we figured it was worth it for a guided experience with all the equipment included. When we woke up that morning and headed down to breakfast at the main dining room, I felt that familiar buzz of excitement that comes with a port day adventure.
