What should have been a simple beach day in Cozumel turned into an epic navigation disaster that had us laughing at ourselves for hours.
I should have known it was going to be one of those days when my husband Mike couldn't find his phone at 7:30 AM, right as we were supposed to meet our tour guide at the gangway. We were cruising on Holland America's Zaandam, and honestly, it had been a perfect sailing so far—smooth seas, incredible sunset from our cabin balcony the night before, and that amazing Indonesian Rijsttafel dinner at the Dining Room. But Cozumel? That's where things took a turn toward the absurd. We'd booked what the cruise line called a "self-guided beach adventure" through the Holland America excursion office. Basically, we got dropped off at a beachclub with a map, a time to return, and the vague instruction that "the beach is just past the main road." How hard could it be, right? Famous last words. Mike finally found his phone wedged between the mattress and the wall—don't ask me how it got there—and we hurried down to meet our ride at 8:15 AM, exactly fifteen minutes late.
