I came to Alaska hoping to photograph bears. What I found was so much more magical than I ever imagined.
I'll be honest—I was nervous about booking a cruise. Me, a serious wildlife photographer who's spent the last decade hiking remote trails with nothing but a backpack and camera gear, suddenly confined to a ship with thousands of people? It seemed like a contradiction. But when my knees started complaining about those backcountry miles and my wife practically begged me to try something "less rugged," I reluctantly looked at Alaska cruises. Then I saw that Celebrity Cruises was offering specialized photography-focused excursions from the Celebrity Apex, and something clicked. Maybe I could actually do this. The moment I stepped aboard the Apex in Seattle, I felt the ship's modern elegance wash over me. The atrium soared five stories above, flooded with natural light, and everything gleamed with that new-ship smell I'd heard about but never experienced.
