I thought celebrating New Year's Eve alone on a cruise would be lonely. Instead, I found myself caught in the most beautifully surreal night of my life.
I stood alone at the rail on Deck 12 of the Seven Seas Splendor, nursing a lukewarm vodka cranberry and watching the Atlantic Ocean blur into darkness. It was 10:47 PM on December 31st, and I was seriously questioning my life choices. Who books a solo cruise for New Year's Eve? Apparently, people going through divorces with non-refundable deposits. When I'd decided to take this trip three months ago, I'd imagined a quiet, reflective evening. Maybe I'd journal in my cabin, order room service, watch the ball drop from the comfort of my veranda. Very zen, very independent woman energy. Very delusional, it turned out. The problem was that the Splendor—this absolutely stunning ship with its sleek modern design and those jaw-dropping ocean-view suites—had other plans. Somehow, I'd ended up pre-registering for the "Elegant New Year's Celebration" in the Atrium at 11 PM, probably during one of those moments when the ship's WiFi was actually working and I was doom-scrolling through the daily program.
